Botulinum Toxin Therapy

Theraputic Botulinum Toxin A is considered a first-line therapy for the treatment of cervical dystonia and for a vast majority of people it can be very effective for relief of muscle spasm and pain.
Once you and your doctor have determined that Botulinum Toxin Type A is right for you, your treatment will consist of a number of injections into the muscles selected by your doctor. Botulinum Toxin injections will be given right in your doctor's office. The amount of Botulinum Toxin and the locations of the injections will depend upon your individual needs. The needles used to administer the toxin are very fine, so most people experience only mild discomfort. You may have mild and temporary discomfort, tenderness and/or bruising at the injection sites.
Because Botulinum Toxin A neurotoxin is injected directly into your affected muscles, it is not expected to be present in your bloodstream. Your doctor will review all potential side effects and contraindications to Botulinum injections at your office visit. You should be able to leave your doctor's office after a brief recovery period.
Many insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid cover the cost of Botulinum Toxin A. There are also assistance programs available through the Cervical Dystonia Fund and other assistance programs. Please inquire at your office visit if you would like more information regarding these assistance programs.
